IMU + edge AI

AI pet health monitoring — the IMU is the new health sensor

Location gets a tracker bought; health data keeps it worn. A six-axis IMU sampled continuously and classified on-device turns the same collar into a health sensor — activity, sleep, scratching, licking, respiration — and health trends are what turn a one-time hardware sale into a subscription your customers renew.

Who usually orders trackers from us

Pet brands adding a wellness story

Whistle and Fi built subscription businesses on health trends. The same feature set — activity, sleep, scratch alerts — can be developed into your own product on our tracker platform.

Pet insurers and vet networks

Early behavioural flags — scratching trends, activity drops, sleep disruption — are exactly the signals that reduce claims and fill preventive-care visits. We integrate to your data platform over API.

Food and supplement brands

A collar that shows activity and coat-scratching trends is a before/after instrument for your product claims — and a retention channel that lives on the dog, not in an inbox.

Working and sporting dog suppliers

Training load, recovery and gait consistency, from the same collar that does the tracking. Ask about custom behaviour classes for your discipline.

What the IMU actually detects — and how

01

Activity, steps and calories

The baseline layer: daily active minutes, intensity bands and an energy estimate scaled by weight and breed. Presented as trends against the pet’s own baseline — a 30% week-over-week drop is the flag a vet wants to see early.

02

Scratching and licking — the early-warning layer

Pathological scratching has a measurable signature: high-amplitude bursts in the 3.8–6.5 Hz band, separable from normal movement in the frequency domain. Rising scratch or lick minutes flag allergies, skin disease and anxiety weeks before a bald patch appears — the single most valued health feature in current-generation trackers.

03

Sleep quality

Sleep duration, interruptions and restlessness, scored nightly. Sleep disruption is one of the earliest observable signs of pain and cognitive decline in senior dogs — and a metric owners check every morning, which is what daily app opens are made of.

04

Resting respiratory rate

With the pet at rest, the IMU resolves the chest’s breathing rhythm — no extra sensor. Resting respiratory rate is the metric vets ask owners to count by hand for cardiac monitoring; the collar counts it every night instead.

05

Eight behaviour classes, on-device

Walking, running, resting, eating, drinking, scratching, shaking, playing — classified on the device at a 0.3 mA standby budget, so the radio only wakes for events worth reporting. Edge inference is what makes continuous monitoring survive on a 900 mAh battery.

06

AI trends in the cloud

On top of the edge classes, the platform layer builds baselines per pet, compares against breed and age cohorts, and turns raw minutes into plain-language insights — "scratching is up 40% this week" — the layer your app charges a subscription for.

Two integration depths

Standard health suite

Activity, sleep and behaviour classes as shipped on our standard trackers, surfaced in your branded app. Integration work is scoped in the development phase.

Best for · Right for brands adding a health tab to a tracker product.

Custom health platform

Your own thresholds, breed baselines, vet-facing reports and API integration — plus custom behaviour classes trained for your use case, delivered with the private platform.

Best for · Right for insurers, vet networks and subscription brands.

Tracker buyers often ask

Does health monitoring drain the battery?

Far less than you would expect: the IMU itself draws microamps, and classification runs on-device at a 0.3 mA standby budget. The radio — not the sensing — is the battery cost, and events are batched so it wakes rarely.

Is this a medical device?

No — and the wording matters. It is a wellness and behaviour monitor: it surfaces trends and suggests a vet visit, it does not diagnose. We help you keep app copy and packaging on the right side of that line per market.

Can you add behaviour classes we need?

Yes, on the custom track: collecting labelled data for a new behaviour and retraining the edge model is routine work. Feasibility depends on whether the motion signature is distinguishable — we will say honestly if it is not.

Do you provide the AI trend layer too?

It is built into the owner app we develop for you. You choose: our platform layer with your branding, or raw event streams over API into your own data science.
